We are excited to announce a variety of new activities for Summer Streets 2016.

Uptown Rest Stop

CITI ‘MAKE IT HERE’
Each week Citibank’s “Make it Here” activation will feature new and exciting interactive programming. During week one, enjoy the beat of New York with live performances and a NYC inspired playlist. In addition, visit this activation for an opportunity to win Today Show Citi Concert Series Tickets. Stop by the Uptown Rest Stop on week two to sample and celebrate local restaurants delights including tastings by Daniel Jackson, Executive Chef at the MoMA Cafes’. Citi blue Sno-cones will also be offered to cool you down on a hot Summer Street’s Saturday. On the last day of Summer Streets during week three, share your New York love story on social media for an opportunity to win prizes and be featured on the Digital Mosaic board. Be sure to include the hashtags #makeithere and #citisummerstreets. A mobile charging station will also be available for you to charge up your phone all three Summer Streets Saturdays!

Hallmark Channel 'Sounds of the Shore’
Stop by and transport yourself from the busy streets of NYC to a quiet and restful seaside town – the setting of Hallmark Channel’s new summer series, ‘Chesapeake Shores.’ Sit in Adirondack chairs or hang out on the pier and listen to soothing coastal sounds. To sweeten your escape, Hallmark Channel will have vending machines where you can “Tweet for a Treat” and enjoy free popsicles and a chance to instantly win $100!

Nike ‘Unlimited NYC’
All NYC athletes are invited to join Nike experts to reach their full athletic potential each weekend. Participate in free play and a soccer tournament on August 6th, test your speed down a 60 meter custom track on August 13th and jump start your day with an athlete inspired training workout on August 20th all on the streets of New York City. Through Nike's partnership with Marathon Kids there will be special 1-mile runs designed just for young athletes with Marathon Kids staff, Nike coaches and Pacers on hand to discuss with the benefits of using Nike+ app.

Zipline
The 165'-long, 30’-high zipline will return to Summer Streets this year and will be positioned at a new location on 53rd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. The Bryant Park Jugglers will also be entertaining Summer Streets participants as they wait in line from 11 am - 12 pm.

  • Zip Line is first come, first served.
  • Individuals must weigh between 50 – 250 lbs to participate.
  • Participants must sign a safety and photo waiver to participate.
  • Participants must register for a timeslot at the Uptown Rest Stop and are encouraged to arrive before 8 am to obtain a slot.
  • Colored bracelets are distributed to denote the registered timeslot.
  • Bracelets are only good on the date and time indicated.
  • You must check-in within the first 15 minutes of your timeslot.
DOT Safety Zone
The DOT Safety Zone will host a variety of educational activities about shared streets and will feature the popular Truck’s Eye View, in which children and adults can climb into a parked truck to experience a truck driver’s perspective on the roadway. Visit all of the activities to have your passport stamped.

DOT Arts& Culture Hub
A variety of fun and interactive workshops will be presented within the DOT Arts & Culture Hub at Rudin Plaza. Visit with some of the City’s most coveted cultural institutions to learn about their exciting offerings and create your own craft to take home! Special thanks to Rudin Management for hosting the Arts & Culture Hub at Summer Streets.

Make something fun and fascinating from small parts of a bicycle. Combine beads with chain links to make a key chain or use an inner tube to string them together and turn these same pieces into a bracelet.

“Win or Lose” is an interactive multi-player version of a Plinko-style carnival game that is free to play, but the participants must agree to be stamped with “WINNER” or “LOSER” based on the outcome of the game. Depending on the outcome of your game, win the chance to wear a temporary badge of honor or shame by literally putting some skin in the game.

“Inspired by Native/Indigenous Design”
The National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution illuminates through exhibitions and programs the diversity of Native peoples of the Americas, from the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of Patagonia. Join NMAI staff to learn about the various enriching programs offered at the museum. Participate in a fun activity to enhance your understanding of Native People of the Plains. There is also an opportunity to win a prize!

Bicycle Utopia, “Bike Art Party”
Located on the east sidewalk on Park Avenue between between 52nd Street and 53rd Street, the “Bike Art Party” is an interactive pop-up bike portrait activity organized by Bicycle Utopia. Participants are invited to get their pictures taken “biking” in New York City, choosing from a selection of cityscapes from the past, present and future.

Timed Guided Walking Tour Information

A single block along the south side of East 23rd Street has four thrift resale shops that support humanitarian causes and this unique cluster is the hold-over of a long history of humanitarian initiatives located in this area. Join MAS as you explore several grand, turn-ofthe-20th-Century headquarters of such organizations as the Russell Sage Foundation and the Charity Organization Society. The tour will examine a Carnegie branch library, a Quaker school, and two former vocational schools for girls, both started by philanthropic efforts and then made part of the public school system. You will experience, within the bustling capitalism of our city, this oasis of concern for all.

A Taste of Summer Sampling Zone

Hand-cycle Demonstration
Test out a hand-cycle on an organized bike circuit on 24th Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue and tell us about your experience. Your comments will help NYC DOT with the possible development of a citywide hand-cycling initiative in the near future. Participants will be able to test a hand-cycle model, a high profile prototype, which allows for easy transfers between a wheelchair and the hand-cycle. People of all abilities are encouraged to join and take a hand-cycle for a ride. There are weight and height limitations for this activity. We ask that all interested parties be able to independently transfer on and off the hand-cycle.

DOT Helmet Fittings
Over the course of three weekends, DOT Safety Education plans to fit between 3,000 and 5,000 helmets. Stop by the west side of 24th Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue for your free helmet!

Week two will feature New York fashion label Vespertine and national brands as they showcase their innovative Fash-tech. On the last day of Summer Streets during week three, share your New York love story on social media for an opportunity to win prizes and be featured on the Digital Mosaic. Be sure to include the hashtags #makeithere and #citisummerstreets. A mobile charging station will also be available for you to charge up your phone all three Summer Streets Saturdays!

Paws and Play Dog Park
Bring your furry friends to the Paws and Play Dog Park located at Astor Place for a chance to make new friends and play with fellow dogs of New York! Dogs are invited to roll around on a grassy knoll, splash around in small pools, test their skills in an agility course and play within a dog park alongside their owners. All rules that apply to the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s dog parks apply to the Paws and Play Dog Park. Fun and playful programming will be presented for you and your pooch by the following organizations: The Good Dog Foundation; Best Friends Animal Society; School for the Dogs, Animal Training & Education Center; and Martial Arfs. Visit for a wagging good time!

Paws and Play Dog Park Rules
  • Monitor, control, and accompany your dog at all times.
  • No dogs in heat. Closely monitor non-neutered males as other males may react aggressively toward them.
  • Prong, choke, and spike collars may not be worn.
  • Dogs involved in a fight must leave the area until all parties calm down.
  • Discourage barking, especially early morning.
  • Children under ten must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Dogs must be licensed, vaccinated against rabies, and free from all communicable diseases.
  • Use caution when bringing food into the area. No glass containers allowed.

“Los Trompos (Spinning Tops)” designed by Mexican-based design team, Hector Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, is named and modeled after the popular children’s toy. The structures, fabricated using nylon rope woven in traditional Latin American patterns, will only spin when two or more individuals work together to generate speed.

Get Street Smart with the NYC DOT Street Ambassadors. Stop by our Cleveland Street station and play with our larger-than-life dominoes or our Velcro Street Mix set to learn how DOT designs city streets. Pick up a free prize while you’re at it!

Parkour Fitness Demonstrations
The Movement Creative will provide demonstrations on using our streets and the surrounding infrastructure as spaces for healthy exercise and fitness.

Museum of Chinese in America “Dragon Boat Crown Making”(*August 6th and 20th)
Celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival and races by designing a wearable, dragon-inspired crown. Dot its eyes to awaken the inner dragon in you!


Storefront for Art and Architecture (“Manhattanisms”) (*August 13th)
The workshop builds upon Storefront’s current exhibition, “Sharing Models: Manhattanisms,” to explore how we understand the ideas and places that we share as city residents. Participants will play with Manhattan’s grid, buildings, parks and spaces, creating their own models and proposing innovative visions for the city’s future.


Foley Square Rest Stop
Vita Coco Beach featuring the Beachside Slide
Returning to Summer Streets this year is Vita Coco’s Beachside Slide, a nearly 300-foot water slide based at “Vita Coco Beach” located at the Foley Square Rest Stop. Vita Coco gives you the chance to slide through the streets of New York City on an inner-tube and cool off during the hot summer days. Right next to the three story water slide is the Vita Coco Beach where you can take a swing in a hammock, hang out at the Beach Bar and enjoy some refreshing coconut water, or relax in the sand (yes, there is real sand!) and listen to live music from the DJ booth. There will also be games including corn hole and giant Jenga, as well as morning yoga sessions starting at 9 am.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Where is Beachside Slide located?
Beachside Slide will be part of the Vita Coco Beach at Summer Streets, located at Foley Square, at the intersection of Centre Street& Lafayette Street.

When can I register to slide on each Summer Streets Saturday?
Registration for August 6 opens on August 1 at 12 pm

Registration for August 20 opens on August 15 at 12 pm


What time does the Beachside Slide start and end?
The Beachside Slide runs from 7 am – 1 pm with registration available for each hour. Riders must be present for 30 minutes before their scheduled timeslot. The last time slot is from 12 pm - 1 pm. Riders cannot enter the line queue after 12:30 pm.

What if I am no longer able to attend?
Unfortunately, you are unable to transfer your registration to another person.

How much does it cost to participate?
Rides at Summer Streets are FREE thanks to Vita Coco Coconut Water!

SLIDING
Is there an age or height limit?
All who are over 46 inches tall and 5 years or older are invited to slide, but remember if you’re under 18, you’ll need to get a sign off from your parents.

Is the slide wheelchair/handicap accessible?
Unfortunately, no.

Do I need a tube to slide?
All participants are required to slide on the inflatable tubes provided by Vita Coco.

What do I wear?
All participants must wear appropriate attire such as: bathing suits, shorts, t-shirts, cover-ups at all times. No jeans or clothing with rivets allowed.

What do I bring with me?
Make sure you bring your printed e-ticket. Please limit your personal belongings. There are NO LOCKERS or places for storage so plan to bring a friend who can hold your belongings, or leave them at home! The City of New York and Slide the City are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

Can my child ride with me?
For safety reasons, all children must ride on their own tube; but we do have a lane just for kids and their parents.

SLIDE RULES

  • All participants must sign a safety and photo waiver before entering the slide.
  • All participants must be over 46” tall.
  • All participants must be at least 5 years of age at time of ride.
  • All participants must wear appropriate attire such as: bathing suits, shorts, t-shirts, cover-ups at all times. No jeans or clothing with rivets allowed.
  • Flip flops or water shoes are recommended but all shoes must be held while riding the slide.
  • No person having any contagious disease or infectious condition such as: sores or inflamed eyes, a cold, nasal or ear discharge, cuts, boils or other evident skin or other bodily infection shall enter the slide.
  • Urinating, expectorating or blowing the nose, or allowing human waste is prohibited.
  • No running is allowed on the line queue, slide, ramp or at the bottom of the slide at any time.
  • No pets allowed on the slide.
  • No glass permitted on the slide.
  • No person under the influence of alcohol or exhibiting erratic behavior shall enter the slide.
  • Keep your hands inside of the lanes.
  • Unsupervised use by children is prohibited.
  • Follow the instructions of the attendant or lifeguard.
  • No standing, kneeling, rotating, chain-riding, or stopping in lanes.
  • Sliding shall be performed only in a feet-first position.
  • Emergency telephone number for police, fire, and hospital is 911.

Wheelchair Sports Federation's Adaptive Basketball
The Wheelchair Sports Federation will offer Summer Streets participants the opportunity to participate in training sessions and live games, or watch an exhibition of practicing adaptive basketball players. Loaner wheelchairs are available to the public for participation in the activities.

Brooklyn Boulders Foundation / The Movement Creative Adaptive Obstacle Challenge
Come test your skills on this unique obstacle course featuring a mix or Parkour (free running), climbing and scrambling on an urban obstacle course for people of all abilities.


On Display/CitiSummerStreets,” by Heidi Latsky Dance (26 Federal Plaza) (Saturday, August 6th, 13th and 20th: 10:30 am and 11:45 am).
Titled “On Display/CitiSummerStreets," choreographer Heidi Latsky of Heidi Latsky Dance has created a living sculpture court from human bodies. A cast of physically diverse individuals will be positioned throughout 26 Federal Plaza for Summer Streets participants to walk around and observe as they pose in classical sculpture-inspired positions.

“M2B, Beijing-New York,” by Niko de La Faye (Saturday, August 6th, 13th and 20th) (10 am – 10:30 am: Foley Square Rest Stop, 11 am – 11:30 am: Midtown Rest Stop and 12 pm – 12:30 pm: 72nd Street and Park Avenue)
Created by French artist Niko de La Faye, “M2B, Beijing-New York” is a mobile kinetic sculpture that will travel along the Summer Streets route. The sculpture, housed on the back of the tricycle, is a traditional representation of the universe that is found in both Eastern and Western cultures. The sculpture itself has been fastened to a traditional Chinese tricycle. Originally fabricated in 2012, the sculpture has traveled 3,400 km between Beijing and Hong Kong.

Culture NOW Art + Architecture Self-Guided Walking Tours
Summer Streets participants can pick up two different maps or download the Culture Now app called CultureNOW’s Guidebook to the Museum Without Walls to learn more about the public art and architectural gems located along the Summer Streets route. Participants can discover the unique buildings and public art that are nestled on Park Avenue from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge on foot, while listening to podcasts by well-known architects and artists.

Department of Design and Construction: The Art and Construction of NYC’s Water Supply
Have you ever wondered how water gets to your faucet? Join New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and our STEAM Initiatives to learn about water distribution through hands-on art, architecture and engineering activities for kids of all ages. Finished works will be displayed temporarily at our nearby construction site. DDC works with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to replace and extend water mains to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to clean water. Our work with DEP brings New York City’s infrastructure up to date, increasing the safety and resiliency of our city’s renowned water supply.

Shared Streets: Lower Manhattan - August 13th
NYCDOT in partnership with the Downtown Alliance is excited to launch Shared Streets: Lower Manhattan on Saturday, August 13th from 11 am - 4 pm. The historic streets of Lower Manhattan will be transformed into a shared street zone where motorists will be encouraged to drive 5mph and will share the streets with pedestrians and cyclists. Come explore an array of cultural programming and local business offerings throughout the streets and public spaces in Lower Manhattan!
