1/15 - OPENING RECEPTION - Tibet Looking Back - Photographs by Jaroslav Poncar

6-8PM
Tibet House US
22 W 15th St (Bet. 5th & 6th Aves)
New York, NY 10011

“Tibet with its vast spaces was created for panoramas." - Jaroslav Poncar

Jaroslav Poncar’s photographs of Tibet were taken over four extensive journeys more than twenty years ago. On his journey to Tibet in 1985, he travelled overland from Chengdu to Lhasa, and further to the former kingdom Guge in the extreme West, experiencing the country as it looked ages ago. In 1985, a German travel agency obtained an authorization to organize the first journey to the sacred Mount Kailash in West Tibet. The camera manufacturer Olympus sponsored Poncar’s trip.

In 1987, Poncar organized an expedition to the Kailash-Manasarovar region to explore the source area of the Brahmaputra and Indus. He and his film team visited the source of the Indus 80 years after geographer and explorer Sven Hedin. Poncar was invited by the University of Vienna to photographically document what was left of Tholing in 1993 as part of a research project. This was his last visit to Tibet. He travelled three times from Lhasa to Guge, twice across Chang Tang via Gertse on the North Route. On all his journeys to the Himalayas and Tibet since 1976, Poncar traveled with two antique Russian panoramic cameras FT-2.

Jaroslav Poncar was born in Prague in 1945. He now lives in Cologne, where he was professor at the Department of Imaging Sciences at the University of the Applied Sciences until his retirement in 2010. His numerous photography-motivated travels and university projects have taken him to the Himalayas and Tibet, Central Asia, India and Cambodia. In 1985, he was the first Westerner to cross Tibet from East to West.

11/7-4/10 - ‘Hollywood Afterlives in Art and Artifact’

Museum of the Moving Image
36-01 35th Ave.
Astoria, NY 11106

Price: Included with museum admission, free Friday evenings

The reimagining and recycling of Hollywood movie iconography in contemporary art, and the way that movies live on in our personal and cultural memories, are explored in the exhibition Walkers: Hollywood Afterlives in Art and Artifact, opening on November 7, 2015 at the Museum of the Moving Image. Organized by independent curator and scholar Robert M. Rubin, the exhibition includes 120 works of 40 artists and directors that dissect, appropriate, and redefine some of the past century’s most iconic films through photography, drawing, sculpture, print, and video. They are joined by a selection of rare film ephemera repositioned as artworks ranging from costume designs for Rosemary’s Baby to the complete original key book stills from The 39 Steps. With a nod to the “walkers,” or zombies, from the TV series The Walking Dead, the exhibition’s title references the lingering power of film detritus on the imagination of the living.

1/9 - Suspended Forest opening reception

5-7PM
Knockdown Center
52-19 Flushing Ave
Queens, New York 11378

Artist Michael Neff brings Suspended Forest, a room-filling forest of discarded Christmas trees collected from the streets of Brooklyn, to Knockdown Center for the month of January.

Suspended Forest has been shown twice previously in an unauthorized, unused space under the BQE along Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg. Those installations were removed by the city within days. The exhibition at Knockdown Center, on view for a month and configured in a grid, allows for a much different experience, most importantly time for the trees to shed their needles into halos on the smooth concrete floor below. Paired with the subtle pine fragrance of the trees and the opportunity for quiet contemplation, the exhibition encourages repeated viewing.
